Scottsville Discusses Possible Gun Range

The Scottsville Town Council will meet Monday night to hear thoughts and ideas on being the new home of a gun range.

"If we were to put it in Scottsville, one of the benefits of doing that would be providing an answer for both the Board of Supervisors and for the police department. They really do need a place for the police to train and we are supportive of that," said council member Dan Gritsko.

The original plans for a shooting range singled out a piece of land in the small community of Keene. It's the site of the county's old landfill and community members sounded off in opposition at just the thought the proposal.

"There's been a lot of opposition by the residents in that area on various reasons, noise and environmental aspects," said council member Ronald Smith.

Council members say they would like to speak with community members about those concerns and perhaps ways to find solutions in the Scottsville area.

A proposed space for the gun range is the Hyosung tire plant. It's been vacant since 2010.

"If we had a training facility in the old plant we could offer some permanent positions, I'm sure," said Smith. "People could move here and plan on make a life here."

Council members say other industries would benefit from the increase of people and traffic in the area.

A finial decision has not been made on the range. Supervisors are expected to once again address the issue at a board meeting this Wednesday.
