Scout Organizes Blood Drive in Memory of Romando/Walton Family

April 11, 2013

A local Boy Scout hopes to help save hundreds of lives while paying tribute to others lost in August of last year.

Albemarle County resident Griffin Yates, a 14-year-old in Troop 17, has organized the Romando/Walton Memorial Blood Drive in honor of the four family members killed in a murder-suicide in Albemarle County last year.

The loss hit close to home for the entire Yates family.

"I was really good friends with Andrew, our older siblings were friends, and then my mom was friends with their mom and it was just kind of like a nice family relationship," said Yates.

Yates says naming the blood drive after the family will help keep their presence in the community.

"When people donate there and see that title, or when people who need blood at a hospital find out that that's where their blood that they needed to save their life came from, then they'll just remember the name and it'll be kind of stuck in their heads for a while," said Yates.

Yates says he is hoping to find about 90 donors to commit to giving blood and has plans to make it an annual event.

"People should definitely at least consider donating blood, not just to remember the Romandos, but to consider the impact it could have on the community," said Yates.

The Romando/Walton Memorial Blood Drive will take place April 27 from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Church of the Incarnation in Charlottesville.
