WINCHESTER, Va. (AP) - The late Sen. Harry F. Byrd Jr. left $800,000 to state and local institutions, including the Winchester-area Salvation Army and the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond.

The Winchester Star reports that he also left $760,000 to 76 long-term employees of his family's two daily newspaper groups, The Winchester Evening Star and Rockingham Publishing Co.

Byrd died June 30 at the age of 98. He was a 20th century champion of racial segregation and fiscal restraint who followed his father into the U.S. Senate but left his father's Democratic Party.

Besides the Salvation Army and the Historical Society, Byrd also left $250,000 to the John Handley Regional Library and $100,000 to Christ Episcopal Church, both in Winchester, among other recipients.
