Seniors Pleased with Parking Spot Removal

May 15, 2014

The folks at Midway Manor say up until recently if they wanted to cross the street outside their apartment they risked getting hit by a car.

“I am afraid that when I go out and I don't see a car coming around. I'm afraid that I will be hit, and that is a very scary feeling," said Midway Manor resident Zillah Dellinger.

Mary Carey, a resident at Midway Manor, made sure that wouldn't happen. She went to Charlottesville City Council and begged them to remove parking spaces that were blocking pedestrians’ views up South Street, to the Ridge/McIntire intersection.

“People in wheelchairs and pushing walkers and things, they could not get across. The motorist weren't stopping for them," said Carey.

The City of Charlottesville agreed to temporarily removed five spots from South Street along where Midway Manor is. After May 23, the city will re-evaluate, but residents say so far it's made a huge impact

“The people here have been talking about it for years, and nobody has been listening, but now they see," said Carey. "It has improved the visibility. It made the people feel more safer going across the street.”

Mary says this is a step in the right direction, but would love a cross walk to be installed, and vows to make sure the residents safety is a city priority.

Police has issued several warning tickets to people who have parked in those spots and ripped up the temporary signs, as well as towed vehicles for parking there.
