It has been nearly a week since a female service dog was reported missing in Albemarle County. Now, there is a family more than a thousand miles away hoping someone has seen their 10-month-old black lab.
When Kylie, an 11-year-old diabetic in Fort Worth, Texas, sent her dog to central Virginia last week for training, she thought she would not see Beta for two to three months. Now, Kylie and her family are left wondering if they will ever get Beta back.
Beta is a diabetic alert dog. She monitors Kylie's blood sugar, and her mom says they have a special relationship.
"The bond between the two of them, I mean, they're inseparable. [It's] absolutely amazing to see them together," said Mindy Calvert. "There's just so much joy when they're together. Beta lights up and follows Kylie around, and I just hate to see them apart right now."
The Calverts got Beta about six months ago from Service Dogs by Warren Retrievers, based out of Orange. After realizing the dog needed some additional training, they temporarily sent her back to central Virginia.
Dan Warren, the founder and president of the organization, says the trainer who was working with Beta says the dog was spooked by horses and ran off near Steubin Lane in the Key West neighborhood on Friday afternoon.
Now, Warren and Kylie's mom are asking anyone who may have seen the dog to come forward.
"It's a desperate plea for someone to do the right thing, turn this dog back in, contact us," said Warren. "There's a girl dependent on this medical alert, diabetic alert dog for this organization to promptly return this dog back to the rightful owner, which is that family."
Beta may be wearing a green service vest with dog tags. She also has an AVID microchip.
