Thousands of people were trapped on Interstate 64 on Monday, as the Virginia Department of Transportation shut down a big part of the Interstate for up to 45 minutes at a time, to work on landslide prevention.

Crews were removing some unstable soil on the north side of the Interstate at Afton Mountain. While the crews were removing the soil, no cars were allowed to be on the Interstate in either direction, to protect them from the possibility of falling rocks.

During the shutdowns, cars were backed up for several miles east of the Crozet exit and west of the Afton Mountain exit.

"I really didn't know about this," said Dwayne Murphy, who was driving from Richmond to Nashville. "Had I known about it, I would have left earlier. I was hoping to get there by six to meet some people for dinner. That's not going to happen."

Katie Ellis was making the drive from Virginia Beach back to school at Radford.

"I'll miss a class or two," she said. "It's nice to miss class, but I should be there, since I have exams in a week."

VDOT officials say the work will continue until at least Thursday. They are encouraging drivers to use Route 250 to avoid delays.
