Construction on the Route 250/McIntire Road interchange is causing some confusion for drivers, because the speed limit keeps changing.

A week ago, work crews posted new speed limit signs. The new signs lowered the limit to 25 miles per hour along some portions of the bypass, and 35 miles per hour along other sections.

"It was kind of a surprise," said Charlottesville resident Sabrina Evans. "We were driving the other day and just noticed the sign indicating the speed limit. "It's an interesting spot for it to be, because it's right where you kind of merge onto the main road."

On Wednesday afternoon, the speed markers were changed again. This time the limits were raised to their original rates of 35 miles per hour and 45 miles per hour.

"Initially the signs went up and I think they were put in the appropriate locations," said Lt. Ronnie Roberts with Charlottesville Police. "This afternoon, after the crew and the engineers work together, there were some upgrades and some modification made to make it."

Police say they understand that people need a little time to get used to the new speed limits.

They will issue warnings for now, but failure to follow the new limits in the future could result in a ticket up to $500.
