Spoiled Milk Pulled from Albemarle Co. Schools

June 4, 2014

Albemarle County schools are taking no chances following a milk recall: They're now trashing all Marva Maid cartons of milk as a precaution.

The school system found spoiled milk in cartons that were not included in the initial recall.

Christina Pitsenberger, Director of Child Nutrition Programs sent out a letter to Albemarle Co. parents about the milk situation.

"We have taken this precautionary health action as the result of the recent discovery of spoiled milk being delivered by Marva Maid, a company that supplies milk to several school divisions in Central Virginia, including Albemarle County," said Pitsenberger in the letter. "On Friday of last week, the company cited the possibility of improper refrigeration in announcing a voluntary recall of all milk with sale dates between May 30 and June 2. We inspect all dairy deliveries to our schools on a daily basis and last week, prior to the recall notice, we removed approximately 300 cartons of milk we suspected may have spoiled. Today, our inspections revealed that milk with sale dates later than June 2 also are spoiled. Effective immediately, we are removing all milk provided by Marva Maid from our supply."

The problem started last week when two school systems near Richmond reported dozens of kids getting sick after drinking milk from Marva Maid.

Virginia Department of Health lab tests found high rates of bacteria in the milk, and Marva Maid voluntarily recalled thousands of cartons.

There are no reports of any student or staff member getting sick in our area.
