State Supreme Court Sides with Judge in Huguely Case

Oct. 31, 2013

The Virginia Supreme Court issues a ruling on Thursday regarding the coverage of the George Huguely trial in Charlottesville.

NBC29 filed a suit after the judge in the trial refused to allow cameras in the courtroom during the sentencing phase. They argued that because a verdict had been reached, the presence of cameras would not prevent a fair trial.

However, the court ruled that because of the vague manner in which the law is written, the decision of cameras in the court is solely at the discretion of the judge and upheld the decision.

Huguely was convicted in 2012 of murdering fellow University of Virginia student Yeardley love.

Attorneys for the Charlottesville Newsplex filed a brief in support of broadcasters in this case.
