Volunteers are using their melodic voices to give back at a senior living facility in Orange County. In this week's Stephanie's Heroes, Stephanie Satchell is featuring the Bluebirds of Happiness singers who perform for residents at the Dogwood Village.

Once a week the Bluebirds of Happiness sing at Dogwood Village in Orange County.

"It just makes you feel good," said Margaret Rowe, President, Golden Horseshoe Volunteer Group.

The group typically sings traditional hymns and they encourage their audience to participate if they want to.

"It just thrills me to see smiles on their faces and when they ring the bells, it's just wonderful," said Jeanette Weaver, Volunteer Singer.

For some residents, this weekly visit from the singers is the only one they get from someone outside of the facility.

"You know when people don't have anyone and they don't have anything to really think about. So, when they see us, they know who we are," said June Clements, Volunteer Singer.

Volunteers say they enjoy their visit just as much as the residents do.

"Many of them are so loving. It's really a joy and a blessing from God," said Louis Weakley, Volunteer Singer.

Many employees at Dogwood Village feel the same way about the volunteers for all that they do.

"Our volunteers are fantastic. There would be no way that we could do without our volunteers. Whenever we call, they're here any time of the day. They're here for our morning programs, afternoon programs, evening programs. We could not function well without our volunteers," said Gayle Collier, Activities Director, Dogwood Village.

Employees say just hearing a few uplifting songs can go a long way. For many residents it's the difference between an ordinary day and one that ends on a high note.

The singers are part of a larger volunteer group at Dogwood Village called the Golden Horseshoe Volunteer Group.
In addition to providing music, they also help out with the residents and they even raise money to help buy new equipment.
