One Charlottesville woman is raising money and awareness with a click of a mouse and a set of clippers. Jaclyn Tahboub is creating a website to help her brother who's fighting a rare form of cancer. She's also bringing people together on the site to shave their heads for a good cause.
Jaclyn Tahboub recently created and now maintains a new website to help her brother Mario who lives in Boston.
“It's incredible. It's amazing it makes me happy that I've been able to do something that has lifted his spirits and helped him feel stronger, physically, emotionally as he goes through chemotherapy,” said Jaclyn Tahboub, Creator, Stand by Mario.
Mario suffers from a rare form of cancer called Myxoid Liposarcoma. Since he is undergoing treatment he's unable to work right now.
“I thought if we could raise enough money to cover his additional living expenses and any medical cost above and beyond what his insurance will cover just things to make him comfortable then that would make me happy,” said Tahboub.
Not only does the website called "Stand by Mario" aim to raise money Tahboub is also hoping to raise awareness about this type of cancer. That's why she asked family and friends to shave their heads for the cause.
“Some of the video is funny. You can see the guys when the blade first hits their head. They have this look like oh my goodness and shock on their face,” said Tahboub.
The guys weren't the ones participating. Mario’s sister kicked off the campaign with a party at her home. She got rid her long locks and traded them in for a much shorter hairdo. She did this all in support of her big brother.
“He was floored. It was a surprise. He was not expecting it, but he is extremely excited about it,” said Tahboub.
Now Tahboub’s family is calling her a hero for organizing this website and making a difference for her brother hundreds of miles away.
“My biggest hope for him is to have a cure and to be cured of this,” said Tahboub.
In addition to learning about the disease and donating money, people can also leave a message for Mario on the website.
