Albemarle County Supervisors voted Wednesday to amend the existing definitions of adequate shelter, space and treatment of dogs in the County.

The new adequate shelter amendment prohibits dog owners from keeping their pets in metal barrels, plastic crates, carrying crates and dog houses with no floors. The treatment amendments states an owner cannot tether a dog 6-months-old or younger or a female dog in heat. Lastly, the spacing amendment lengthens the minimum tether rope requirements from three times to dog's size to five times.

Dog advocate Stacy Norris says the changes are an improvement.

"First and foremost, it brings attention to the situation and the fact that animals need attention. They need proper respect by the people who consider themselves their guardians," she said.

Sharon Ackerman, who initiated an effort to get the County to upgrade its companion animal care codes, is equally excited about the amendments. Her next step is to talk with animal control about enforcement.

While both Norris and Ackerman have helped many dogs in Albemarle County, plenty more being neglected and living in rough conditions.

"Dogs are chained 24/7, sometimes without water for most of the day, without food or with a chain that kinks so that they can't actually reach the food and water bowl," she said.

And it's dogs like these that Norris and Ackerman hope the new ordinances will help.

I'm all for the best treatment possible for any animal. I try not to judge the owners love of thier animal because they don't have a nice deck for them to lounge on overlooking ten acres. I would be very upset if someone saw my dog on a line outside while I was in the house for a while and you reported me as an animal abuser. Respectfully, Ann

I think people who cannot care for their dog properly should not be allowed to even get one. Dogs have feelings and need attention, play time and interaction with humans.

Next time anyone sees a Dog tied up, please call the Local Shelter. Please help those who need it & can't Speak for themselves. Dogs are such lovable animals & does love someone, who does care for them. :)
