Elementary school students encouraged their peers to take a stand against bullying.
Jackson-Via Elementary hosted the "Bully Nots", a leadership group of third and fourth grade students. They encourage kids who witness bullying to tell the bully to stop or offer support to the victim.
The program spreads an anti-bullying message through song, rap, skits, and plays.
Kristin Ullrich, a group leader of "Bully Nots", says creating a safe and respectful environment helps students learn.
"When they feel like this is a school where everyone cares about each other, this is a community - Jackson-Via's a community, Charlottesville's a community - and we're all here to support each other, be friends, then students can learn to the best of their ability."
Jackson-Via kindergarteners joined fourth graders during the special school-wide assembly on Wednesday. The title of the play was "Rise and Shine with Friendship in Your Heart."
