Students Help Out at the Va. Autism Institute

Nov. 12, 2013

A group of Tandem Friends students spent Tuesday helping out at the Virginia Institute of Autism (VIA).

They spent the day touring the school, meeting students there, and doing service activities. The Tandem students worked on the angel tree program, which assists low-income children, and helped with putting together mailings for their military family outpatient clinic.

"I think it’s great that students in our community are becoming aware and becoming sensitized to children with autism and the needs of kids with disabilities and are able to give back to their community and then share with their peers what is autism," Dr. Yanz Padilla Dalmau of VIA said.

The VIA says the partnership helps spread awareness about autism and creates a sense of community.
