Teacher Breaks Record in Pentathlon and Focuses on Keeping Her Students Fit.

Erika Pierce, history teacher at the Community Charter School in Burley Middle and national champion in the Master's pentathlon.

"About six month's ago I heard about master's track and field and got myself kind of mentally prepared for the kind of training and for getting in that kind of shape and decided to go for it," says Pierce.

Masters track and field is for people who want to compete after the age of 30.

"That night after I won the pentathlon I went back to my hotel room and did some looking online and realized that I broke the American record." explained Pierce.

Now she teaches students to stay active throughout life.

"What I try to do is model life-long fitness by showing them that at the age of 42 I can set goals for myself and I can decide to do something crazy that I didn't think I would be able to do," says Pierce.

Pierce brings her active lifestyle to the classroom, where she not only teaches students, but she also inspires them.

Eighth grader Jacqueline Sheedy is one of her students and looks up to her as a role model.

"She is so enthusiastic about teaching and getting her students to learn," says Sheedy. "To see a teacher actually get active with her students and to jump in there, so she is definitely a great role model for me."

"I love getting out there with them, all of the adults do something with the kids in advisory," explains Pierce. "Whether its to go walking or there was a step team that we had and it's just a lot of fun to get to know the kids on that level."
