Students and teachers from Albemarle High School (AHS) and members of the community, are coming together this weekend to remember Sydney Aichs through a 5K fun run.
Sydney died back in 2008 after being struck by a truck that ran a red light at Forest Lakes. She was a member of the soccer team at AHS and participated in the marketing club known as DECA.
This is the 5th annual 5K event and it raises money for scholarships for senior athletes at AHS. Students at the high school still remember her spirit.
"It's a beautiful thing to really watch the students who didn't know her, only heard of the incident happening, and are so motivated to continue this race," says Laura Massey, teacher at AHS.
Members of the girl's soccer team participate in the run by walking in her memory.
"Her memory still lives in the soccer community and they like to get us involved with it" says Carmen Thomas, sophomore and member of the soccer team at AHS.
"She was a very important individual to us so we need to honor her properly," says Avi Persaud, junior at AHS.
The 5k Fun Run takes place at 8am on May 18th at Forest Lakes South in Albemarle county.
They are expecting about 200 runners at this year's 5K run.
