It was the first day of school for students in Albemarle and Greene counties, as well as the city of Charlottesville.
Brand new students at Greenbriar Elementary filed off of their buses this morning to be greeted by their new teachers and principal.
"We've been excited since schools ended in June so we've been working really hard getting the building ready and the classrooms ready," says Shawn Muir, assistant principal at Greenbriar.
With smiles on their faces, they walked down the halls ready to begin a new chapter in life.
"My favorite part of school is getting to see my teacher on the first day," says 3rd grader Dylan Hensley
"I get to see my best friend," says 2nd grader Junia Bartholomew.
"It's really big, it looks really fun," says 1st grader Elaine Williams.
Some students at Greenbriar Elementary are getting their first look at what school is all about, but at Monticello High School (MHS) they're taking their learning to the next level, with social media.
"It's something we have to embrace now, social media is something most students use," says Dr. Jesse Turner, Principal at MHS. "So we have to make sure that we are embracing it and getting ahead of the curve."
One teacher is excited to introduce photography to his students and hopes that it will help broaden his photography skills.
"It has changed the photography world in so many ways that there is so much more available to the photographer and great for the students," says Rob Garland, teacher at MHS.
Senior student Mattie Morris believes today will be the start of a great school year and have advice for students.
"Have fun picking your classes, bond with your teachers, it makes it so much easier," says Morris. "It's really what you make of it."
