Tibetan Monks Demonstrating Sacred Rituals in Charlottesville

Sept. 2, 2013

A group of Tibetan monks are visiting Charlottesville, offering a glimpse of their cultural practices and teachings.

Members of the Tashi Kyil Monastery will be slowly creating a "mandala" during their visit. The ancient art form involves total concentration as the monks skillfully use colored sand to make a symbol of compassion and peace.

On Thursday, the monks will be giving a discussion called "Explanation of Mantas." They will be offering a demonstration of their chants and other sacred rituals on Friday.

The Unity of Charlottesville and the University of Virginia Tibet Center invited the monks to participate in this year's event, which runs through Friday.

The events are free, but there is a suggested donation of $10.

A full schedule of events can be found at the link below.
