Expect delays on Interstate 64 in the area of Afton Mountain over the next week. The Virginia Department of Transportation is beginning work to remove an unstable area of soil on Afton Mountain at milepost 100.3. That is near the Waynesboro exit.
Beginning Thursday, the westbound right lane and shoulder will be closed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Beginning Monday, about four times each day, traffic on I-64 will be restricted in both directions for 30-45 minutes. Those restrictions will be in effect from Exit 114 at Ivy to Exit 99 at Afton and will continue through Thursday, April 25.
VDOT is warning drivers that they can expect significant congestion and delays. It suggests drivers use Route 250 as an alternate.
