Twinkies, Ding Dongs Hard to Find after Hostess Collapse

November 19, 2012

As bankruptcy problems for Hostess continue without resolution, the hunt is on in Charlottesville for a number of the company's signature sweets as they slip off the shelves.

Store shelves in Charlottesville once stacked with Twinkies and cupcakes are now largely empty, since all Hostess plants have ceased production.

"[Customers are] asking do we have Twinkies, do we have chocolate cupcakes, and we're out," said Courtney Maupin, an employee at the Shell gas station on Preston Avenue. "Our Hostess section is very empty."

On many store shelves, customers may find donuts or Sno Balls, but the more common Twinkies and Ding Dongs are harder to find.

"They're coming in and buying three or four packs of Hostess at a time," Maupin said.

There's certainly no shortage of confectionery treats at any convenience store or grocery store, but there's something about the Hostess brand in particular that makes the situation a little harder to handle.

"It's like an icon, an American icon," said Diana Rangel. "The Twinkie, the Ding Dong and the cupcakes."

"I just love them," Maupin said of the Twinkies. "They're just so creamy and soft and good."

Granted, Hostess products may not be for everybody.

"I don't mind because I don't eat them," Melanie Rangel said. "They're kind of gross."

There are still other brands available on store shelves, but in the meantime, Hostess fans are hoping for resolution before it's too late.

"It's going to be sad to see them go," Maupin said. "So hopefully someone else will pick them up and continue to make them."

Hostess and one of its unions are going into mediation to try and resolve their differences, which would ultimately reopen the company's factories.
