A Charlottesville doctor is hoping to promote health with a new grant and fellowship.

UVa Doctor Matthew Trowbridge recently received a fellowship from the U.S. Green Building Council along with a $350,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

He'll use the grant and fellowship to research ways to design schools, homes, offices and neighborhoods that promote health and well-being.

"What we really want to do is use the infrastructure that has been built up now around green building to promote things like energy conservation and apply that ability to shift the real estate markets to start having a better consideration of health promotion and human experience factors to go alongside sustainability factors," said Dr. Trowbridge, UVa School of Medicine.

Much of Dr. Trowbridge's focus will be on walkability by designing neighborhoods and buildings that allow people to get more physical activity. He's also hoping to find ways to better plan communities with closer access to grocery stores and markets so that everyone has equal access to healthy foods.
