UVa Holding Annual Conference to Improve Physical Health

Oct. 10, 2013

Students, lawmakers and school administrators are coming together in hope to improve physical health and the well-being of kids in Central Virginia.

The 3rd Annual Youth-Nex Conference is underway at the University of Virginia Curry School of Education. During a panel discussion, people learned strategies for increasing physical activity and healthy eating.

At a time when many children are obese, and schools are cutting back physical education classes, organizers say it's important for parents to get involved.

“This is not a problem that’s going to be solved by legislations or regulation,” says Bill Dietz, the keynote speaker at the conference. “It's going to be solved at the local level and it's only going to be solved at the local level if parents are engaged.”

The keynote speaker says increasing physical activity and healthy eating habits will also improve class performance, behavior and test performance.
