Some people say the Mayan calendar describes the world as ending on December 21, 2012. Not everybody agrees.

Lydia Rodriguez is a Ph.D candidate at the University of Virginia's Anthropology Department. She's specializing in Mayan culture and says the world is not ending Friday.

"The one text written by the classic Maya that talks about the complete 13 baktun, now as you can see it's now in very good shape," Rodriguez explained, pointing at images on a monitor.

The baktun is a series of cycles within the Mayan calendar. Friday marks the last day of the cycle.

Mayan writings mention the apocalypse but missing pieces of its message may not tell the whole story.

Pointing at a monitor Rodriguez said: "What you see is that, this part, this part right here exactly what's going to happen in the completion of the 13 baktun is missing."

Rodriguez says other scholars have studied the subject matter and have concluded that the world will not end.
