UVa Professor Talks to Local Business Owners About Tough Economic Times

Oct. 24, 2013

Charlottesville business owners and entrepreneurs took part in the second Better Business Challenge on Thursday, learning how to get their businesses through tough times.

Professor Jared Harris of The University of Virginia's Darden School of Business did a study on 150 businesses in economically depressed areas of the Commonwealth.

Prof. Harris talked to them about what types of hardships they were going through, and how they were helping their businesses survive.

He says the main thing he noticed, and the thing he wanted to teach today's participants, was that help can come from anywhere in the community.

"Firms experience all sorts of hardships, but the theme that came through all of this was that engagement with the community was what helped them to weather those hard times, and that showed up in the data."

The Better Business Challenge is a free seminar opened to all business owners.
