UVa Researchers Find Protein to Help AIDS Patients

March 29, 2013

The University of Virginia School of Medicine is working on a way to reduce the side effects for people battling AIDS.

People with AIDS usually take anti-viral drugs to keep the disease in check.
However, those drugs can hurt the body in others ways and even lead to diabetes.

Researchers have found the protein that is causing those side effects.

"What we can use this structure for is to in the future design drugs that are still effective against HIV but limit the severe side effects of that drug," said UVa Research Associate Edward Pryor.

That same protein is also linked to a genetic disease that causes young children to age too fast and look elderly.

They hope their research can lead to drugs that cure that disease.
