UVa Student Council Disapproves of Dragas Reappointment

January 18, 2012

UVa's Student Council unanimously approved a resolution that Rector Helen Dragas should not be reappointed to the Board of Visitors.

It took the council nearly seven months to make their position clear after some hesitation.

"I think there is a lot of issues that we have to consider because we're the students chief negotiating body," said Representative Body Chair, Alexander Reber. "We are the chief representative body of these students and we need to make sure that we fully understand the consequences of what we are doing."

The council surveyed students and 88% said that reappointing Dragas is not what they wanted to see and the student council agreed.

"Right now the student council unanimously approved the resolution, which seems to indicate that it is their voice that Helen Dragas should not be re-appointed to the board," said Graduate School of Arts & Sciences representative Adam Lees.

The decision comes just days after Dragas' reappointment cleared a key senate committee in Richmond. CBS 19 asked a council member why the group didn't approach state leaders with their concerns during the general assembly meeting.

"Their was some lack of clarity with the legislative affairs committee about how they should actually approach the legislature about this, since there was no establish opinion," said Lees.

Some council members say if Dragas is reappointed, they would would still work with her.

"I'll work with a crook if it meant moving the university forward. You don't have to like somebody, and some sense you may not even have to respect some one to work with them," said Lees.

Dragas will still have to be cleared by the full senate and House of Delegates to be reappointed.
