UPDATE:
Officials at UVa Wise are now saying that initial reports of a gunman on campus were a hoax.
In a statement, officials say a student reported seeing a man with a gun near a residence hall around 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday. University officials then issued a campus alert and did a building-by-building search. No gunman was found.
When police interviewed the student later, the student admitted that the initial report was a hoax.
University officials declared the "all clear" on campus at about 10:45 p.m.

There are few details, but the school website has two warnings two students to stay in their rooms, and keep the doors locked.
Media outlets report Virginia State Police will assist the Wise County Sheriff's Department in the search for a gunman.
