Need something to do this weekend? Take a step back into time to celebrate Charlottesville's history.
Organizers are preparing for the inaugural Virginia Festival of History. It kicks off Friday with events scheduled all around town. The goal is to have residents explore how people lived and thought throughout the city's 250 years.
Events over the 10 day festival include: lectures, historical tours, and exhibits. Organizers hope to make this an annual event.
"We are history here. This has been history since the beginning of this country and not just with us coming to the shores; it was before. So it's an opportunity for people to have fun and get acquainted with history," Morgan Perkins, Coordinator of the Virginia Festival of History.
The uncovering of Charlottesville's time capsule is also part of the Festival of History. The capsule was first buried at the Charlottesville Circuit Court back in 1962. City officials will dig it up Sunday afternoon to find out exactly what's inside.
"We have done a great job of keeping track of our history. I don't think we've done such a good job of telling our history, so I think this is an opportunity for us to look back on where we've come from and all the diverse stories," said Ric Barrick, Celebrate 250 Program Director.
