UPDATE:

Virginia State Police say a man charged at an Albemarle County officer before being shot dead.

The incident happened the morning of June 8 at a home in Afton. Police were called to the house on Rockfish Gap Turnpike for a report of a domestic situation.

State Police say the Albemarle officer who responded saw a woman being assaulted outside the home. The suspect ran towards the officer who fired his weapon.

The suspect has been identified as Gregory Rosson, Jr., 21, of Crozet. Rosson died at the scene. His body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond for examination and autopsy.

Witnesses to Saturday's fatal officer-involved shooting in Afton are revealing more details about the person who was shot.

Police were called to the 9000-block of Rockfish Gap Turnpike to respond to an early-morning domestic disturbance. That's where an officer fired a weapon, killing somebody at the scene.

Police have not released a name, but neighbors identify the person killed as 21-year-old Gregory Rosson.

A neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous, says it is the same Gregory Rosson who was arrested in December after an altercation with Albemarle County police.

In December, police responded to a call about a verbal disorder on Jarmans Gap Road. They ended up finding Rosson in a convenience store parking lot in the 7800-block of Rockfish Gap Turnpike. Police said he became combative with an officer and that it took multiple officers to subdue him.

He was charged with two counts of assaulting an officer and resisting arrest, among other charges.

Rosson was scheduled to be in Albemarle County Circuit Court on Tuesday, June 11, for the December incident.

Virginia State Police say it could take weeks or months to complete an investigation into what happened during Saturday's shooting.
