In Virginia, it is still illegal for a couple to live together if they aren't married. It looks like the cohabitation law created back in 1877 is on its way to being eliminated.
A Virginia Senate Subcommittee voted 15-0 today to abolish the law. A local constitutional lawyer says the problem with the law comes down to an invasion of privacy.
"I worry that we don't want the government to be a "Peeping Tom" and telling us what to do in our homes," John Whitehead, president of the Rutherford Institute, said. "So, if we really want to protect the constitutional rights to privacy, this law will be done away with."
Virginia is one of only four states in the country that has a cohabitation law in place. The other states are Florida, Michigan, and Mississippi.
