Virginia State Police confirmed Sunday night that the investigation into an officer-involved shooting in Afton could take weeks or months.

Police spokeswoman Deborah Cox said in an email there is no set time frame for the investigation.

An Albemarle County Police officer fired a weapon early Saturday morning while responding to a domestic disturbance on Route 250 in Afton. One man died at the scene.

Beyond that, police have released little information about what may have led the officer to fire.

Albemarle County Police say the officer involved has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the results of an internal investigation, separate of what the state police are investigating.
