Delegate Lynwood Lewis has won the Democratic nomination to take Ralph Northam's seat in the Senate.
Northam is now the Lieutenant Governor-elect of Virginia.
Governor Bob McDonnell will schedule a special election to find a replacement for the Senate's sixth district.
Lewis was most recently re-elected to a sixth term in the House of Delegates.
Republicans will hold a canvass Thursday to choose their nominee.
