The Virginia General Assembly will convene this Wednesday and focus on several issues concerning the commonwealth. Legislators will bring forth bills they've worked on throughout last year.

The topic of guns will be one of the issues at the center of attention.

During an interview last month, Gov. Bob McDonnell said policy makers should discuss allowing school officials to carry firearms on campus. The discussion came to light after the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Newtown, Conn.

"If people were armed, not just a police officer, but other school officials that were trained and chose to have a weapon, certainly there would be an opportunity to stop an individual trying to get into the school," McDonnell said in a radio interview.

Some lawmakers aren't in agreement with gun toting teachers.

"We shouldn't be about arming teachers and the principal. Those people should be about creating this nurturing and learning environment for children. We shouldn't give them more responsibilities," said state Sen. Creigh Deeds (D-25th District).

Some lawmakers say there are other options to consider.

"We currently have school resource officers at the school. One of the thing we'll be looking at is whether we want to expand that to other schools," said Del. Rob Bell (R-58th District).

It will be up to lawmakers to keep laws the same, add more officers to schools or allow teachers to carry weapons.
