Va. House Subcommittee to Take Up Dragas' Reappointment

January 23, 2013

Helen Dragas' road to reappointment to the University of Virginia Board of Visitors continues Thursday, as the Virginia House of Delegates considers her role as rector.

But the discussion won't come without opposition.

Last week, UVa.'s student council passed a resolution that does not endorse Dragas' reappointment to the board. On Thursday, a number of them will get up at 5 a.m., drive to Richmond and attend the hearing.

"We owe it to the students and really to the future academic success of this university to be there in Richmond to voice our opposition and really show the delegates why that is and what we want for this university," said Neil Branch, the student council's vice president for organizations.

Student council members say they've received support from a number of delegates after passing their resolution, and they hope to follow through by showing up and showing how dedicated they are to the cause.

"We really value the sense of honor and the community of trust, and with that, open governance and a commitment to transparency, and we believe neither of which Helen Dragas has shown," Branch said.

The hearing in the House comes after the state Senate voted overwhelmingly Monday to support the governor's decision to reappointment Dragas, 29-9.

After the subcommittee hearing Thursday, the same process will take place with the House Privileges and Elections Committee, then the House of Delegates as a whole.

The hearing begins at 8 a.m. in the General Assembly Building.
