Va. In-home Care Provider Sentenced in Abuse Case

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - An in-home care provider has been sentenced to more than a year in jail for mistreating a 93-year-old woman with dementia.

A Virginia Beach judge sentenced 48-year-old Shelia D. Beard on Friday after video footage was shown in court of Beard punching, slapping and taunting Selma Cardon Bennett. Beard was sentenced to 18 months but given credit for four months spent in custody during court proceedings.

Beard was indicted in July 2011 on charges of abuse or neglect of an incapacitated adult. She later entered an Alford plea, meaning she did not admit guilt but agreed that evidence was strong enough to convict her.

Beard spent about five years caring for Bennett, who died last June at age 94.
