CHESTERFIELD, Va. (AP) - Chesterfield County police are investigating the fatal shooting of a robbery suspect by an officer during a struggle.
Police tell media outlets that 45-year-old Frankie Pitt of Richmond was shot early Sunday near the intersection of the Chippenham Parkway and Hull Street Road.
The officer stopped on a parkway onramp for what he initially thought was a disabled motorist. He discovered the driver was a suspect in a robbery that had occurred 10 minutes earlier.
Police say Pitt resisted arrest and the two struggled for the officer's handgun. The officer shot Pitt, who died at the scene.
The officer was treated at a local hospital for non-threatening injuries and released.
