RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Providing security during a presidential campaign can be costly.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/VoavgC ) reports that four Richmond-area police departments and Virginia State Police racked up more than $350,000 in costs to provide security for President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney during their multiple campaign visits.
The total doesn't include the state police's costs for the final two-and-a-half weeks of the campaign.
The local police departments are asking the campaigns to reimburse their costs. Based on past experience, state police are absorbing the cost.
The Obama and Romney campaigns in Virginia referred questions to the Secret Service.
A Secret Service spokesman says local police agencies are advised that the federal agency isn't funded to reimburse them for campaign security.
