The leader of Virginia's Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) program visits Albemarle County to learn how to help kids get involved in math and science.

Megan Healy was at Albemarle High School on Friday morning, which has a STEM Academy, focusing on math, science, and engineering.

Students told us about some of the unique projects they've been working on.

“We built bridges out of spaghetti,” says Ana Daley, a senior in the MESA Program. “Coming up with your own ideas was better than like trying to look something up on the internet. A lot of people just kind of looked up designs and stuff and tried to follow them, but it really actually worked better for people who just kind of thought about it themselves.”

Albemarle County is adding a third academy next year at Western Albemarle High School, where they will focus on environmental science.
