Va. Senators Warner, Kaine Sponsoring Offshore Energy Production Bill

May 22, 2013

Virginia Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine are co-sponsoring a bill that would expand America's offshore energy production.

The bill, The Virginia Outer Continental Shelf Energy Production Act of 2013, would create a five-year leasing plan, and provides revenue sharing between the US and Virginia.

It is similar to House legislation recently proposed by Representative Scott Rigell from Virginia.

Warner and Kaine are strong supporters of wind energy potential for areas off the Virginia coast.

“Virginia is well positioned to be a national leader in offshore energy exploration. A comprehensive energy strategy – including oil, gas, wind, solar, tidal and other areas – can transition us to a clean energy future while bridging that transition with secure U.S. fuels we don’t have to import,” said Sen. Kaine.

The Warner/Kaine legislation requires appropriate environmental reviews before any production could begin, as well as consultation with federal agencies such as the Navy, NASA, NOAA and others to ensure energy exploration or production does not disrupt federal activities along the Virginia coast.
