Virginia State Police say nine people died in traffic accidents over the four-day Labor Day weekend.
That's up from the six fatalities recorded during the same holiday period in 2012.
Officials say that five of the victims weren't wearing seatbelts and that alcohol was a factor in at least two fatal wrecks.
More than 11,000 drivers were cited for speeding and more than 2,400 were cited for reckless driving. Troopers arrested 108 impaired drivers.
The statistical counting period was from Friday through midnight Sunday.
