Va-based Coast Guard Counter-piracy Team Returns

March 9, 2013

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (AP) - A Virginia-based Coast Guard team has returned home after a five-month counter-piracy effort.

Officials say the Chesapeake-based Coast Guard Maritime Security Response Team returned Friday after deployment to the Middle East.

The detachment served under the direction of the Navy's 5th Fleet aboard the Jacksonville, Fla.-based USS Farragut and the Portsmouth-based USS Winston Churchill.

While aboard the Navy ships, the team provided expertise in emergency medical procedures, mission planning and execution. That expertise included detecting hidden compartments onboard vessels suspected of smuggling contraband and conducting drills involving the interdiction of suspected pirate skiffs and vessels involved in illicit activity.
