In this weeks Virginia Adventures, Dan Schutte takes us 65 miles South to the James River Float Company for some rafting.

The trip beings with a short sting on the Mare River, that flows into the James River.

Right off the bat you are surrounded by some great scenery, and some rushing water.

"We got holes and ferries, bounce off a few rocks, but no terrifying big water, but we do have jump rock and the water falls" says Mason Basten, one of the owners and guides from the James River Float Company.

The water falls are just a short hike from one of the beaches the rafters use for a quick break.

After some respite, its back on the raft for some more paddling, and even a little history.

"Men operated form the headwaters of the Jackson (river) all the way to Richmond" explains Basten. Nearly all of the freight going West to East used to travel by boat down rivers like the James. "The kids will learn on my boat." says Basten.

The Company takes kids as young as six, and adults as old as 95.

The rapids are fun, but if you are looking for something more, there is also the aptly named Jump Rock.

"If you do what you love" says Basten, "you never work a day, and I'm pretty fortunate to do this."

All in all, a fun and entertaining voyage and a great way to spend a few hours on some of Virginia's most historic and most picturesque water.
