RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Catholic Diocese of Richmond is asking parishes to help victims of Typhoon Haiyan by taking up a special collection.

The typhoon struck the eastern Philippines on Friday. The official death toll from the disaster rose to 1,774 on Tuesday.

The diocese says in a news release that parishes are being asked to take up the collection on Nov. 16 and Nov. 17, or Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. The money will be given to Catholic Relief Services.

The diocese says donations also can be made directly to Catholic Relief Services.
