Virginia Lawmakers Take Oath of Office at U.S. Capitol

January 3, 2012

Virginia's newest senator, Democrat Tim Kaine, has taken the oath of office.

Vice President Joe Biden administered that oath on Thursday afternoon in the Senate Chamber Room. The oath says: "Do you solemnly swear that you will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic, that you bear true faith and allegiance to the same, you take this obligation freely without any mental reservation, and that you will well and faithfully discharge the duties upon which you are about to enter, so help you God?"

Kaine was one of a dozen newly-elected senators to take the oath on Thursday.

Kaine is taking the senate seat that Democrat Jim Webb vacated after serving one term. Virginia's Senate seats have rotated quite frequently in recent years. The Commonwealth has had five different men serve as senator in the past seven years.

Rep. Robert Hurt, a Republican from Virginia's 5th district also took the oath of office on Thursday. Hurt is starting his second term in Congress.

"It is a privilege to serve the people of Virginia's 5th District in the United States Congress," Hurt said. "I look forward to continuing the work that we in the House of Representatives started in 2011 to create jobs and cut wasteful federal spending. Though we have great challenges ahead, I look forward to a new year, a new Congress, and to serving the good people of Virginia's 5th District as I work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to address the issues that we face."
