With a lack of snow and above average temperatures this winter, it is no surprise to see a bug flying around outside like it is spring. If you thought this winter has been warm, you are correct.
"Based on observations from McCormick Observatory this is about the third warmest winter so far in the history of observations, which stretches back over a hundred years," said Jerry Stenger, the UVA Director of Climatology.
With one of the warmest winters on tap, climatologist are feeling the difference by numbers, and exterminators are noticing the number of early insects.
"Because of the weather, it's been a lot warmer so therefore we are having a lot more pest pressure from the outside in with mainly ants," said Bruce Goodman, General Manager of Orkin.
Although it may not feel like it, winter technically lasts through March. As long as the warm weather sticks around insects, could be a winter pest on warm days.
"It's kind of an unknown because of the weather situation. It all depends, if we have a cold snap that could push things away but it could be we have a rough spring coming because we are already seeing that now at this point," said Orkin.
To protect your home from insects, professionals suggest keeping trees and shrubbery trimmed, having your windows sealed and keeping food particles swept up in the kitchen.
