A white powder created a scare at the Charlottesville post office on Saturday morning.

Fire and HAZMAT crews evacuated the post office on Route 29 for an hour.

They tested a white powdery substance found leaking out of a package in the mail room. Crews evacuated the building and found the substance was a kind of cleaning detergent.

Mail trucks were back on the road shortly after the scene was cleared around 11:30 a.m. this morning.

"Any type of powder call, we take precautions to treat everything as a legitimate emergency until our sampling and monitoring can prove otherwise," said Charlottesville Battalion Chief Jeff Garrison.

Garrison says the post office, fire department and police crews all had their own procedures to follow but in the end it was a team effor to make sure everyone was safe.
