Jeanette Smith from Vine Smith Vineyard Services in Stevens City, Virginia won a distinguished award. She won the 2011 Grower of the Year Award.
Smith has managed and operated the commercial vineyard for more than seven years. She says the wine industry sounds glamorous, but it requires plenty of work.
"It is a lot of labor and the main goal is to bring sunlight into the vineyard and capture that sunlight and turn it into. It's an old cliche, but to turn sunlight into great wine," said Smith.
The ceremony took place at the Omni Hotel in Charlottesville. The wine industry contributes more than $747 million a year to the state economy.
