Young Writers Learn Ins and Outs of Screenwriting

March 9, 2013

High school students from around the commonwealth were in Charlottesville Saturday for a screenwriting workshop at Light House Studio.

A dozen young writers are learning the ins and outs of what it takes to write their own screenplays from scratch by actor and playwright Denise Stewart.

During the three-part course, students are constructing scripts for four-to-five minute short films a few of them will get a chance to see their work come to life.

"Light House is going to produce two of those and potentially more down the road, so I think that part of it makes it really exciting, that if they write it, it has a really good shot that they could see it made into a film, and I think that is exciting for them," said Stewart.

Caleb Townsend traveled from Harrisonburg for the class. The Eastern Mennonite High School senior says he has always wanted to be a screenwriter, even though he believes writing is the most difficult part of the filmmaking process.

"They say, when you're making a movie, you make it three times -- you write it, then you direct it and edit it. Writing, I think, is the most creative and challenging," said Townsend. "If you direct a movie or edit, that's really cool because you're putting your own spin on someone else's work, but if you're writing it, you're not basing it off of anything. You can call it 100 percent yours."

The students' scripts selected by Light House Studio will be produced later this year.
