A Charlottesville woman has taken it upon herself to raise money for the American Red Cross and victims of Superstorm Sandy.
The fundraiser is a Zumba-thon, inspired by the cardio-dance workout.
It will be a three-hour class on Jan. 12 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Gold's Gym on Hydraulic Road.
It's $15 to attend, and all proceeds will go directly to the American Red Cross. There will also be raffle tickets to buy, where entrants can win one of the many prizes donated by local businesses. Some of them include a wine tasting with limo service, a night at the Omni Hotel, free bowling, a year's membership to Gold's Gym, salon visits and more.
Refreshments during the Zumba-thon will be donated by Whole Foods.
"It's not just about you in the world, we're one big community," said Emmy Woody, a Zumba instructor who helped organize.
"Neighbors are neighbors, whether they're hundreds of miles away or not. It doesn't matter," said organizer Amy Mullee, who has family and friends in New York and New Jersey.
Mullee benefited from American Red Cross services when Hurricane Bonnie hit South Carolina.
"It was very humbling and eye-opening to be able to stay in that shelter for three nights," Mullee said.
She says we're not too far away in Charlottesville, and it'll be fun to use the Zumba skills they have to raise money for this good cause.
