littlejohn's New York Delicatessen has expanded. Fans of the sandwich shop can now pick up a sub at The Shops at Stonefield in addition to its original deli location on The Corner.
On Thursday, hundreds of friends and family stopped by the new store for a "soft opening" before the public can dig in on Friday.
"It's an opportunity for us to say thank you to the community," said Chris Strong, chief operating officer of littlejohn's Company Stores.
littlejohn's on The Corner has been in business since the 1970s.
The new location will give non-University of Virginia students easier access to their favorite subs.
"A lot of people come to The Corner in the summer when the students are gone, but now they have another place to come to get the littlejohn's experience with a little easier parking and a different crowd," said Matt Rose, managing director of New City Capital.
The company says it has a "cult" following because people associate it with their college experience. But no matter where they serve, they want to make sure their customers are biting into the same sandwich they've come to love -- no matter how big the business gets.
"We've made some changes in the operation, but all of those changes are designed to support the quality and make that more consistent, so if you like a Wild Turkey here in Charlottesville, you're going to love it in Richmond and anywhere else we grow," said Rose.
Richmond is on the map for the expansion. Strong says customers can expect a shop to open up near Virginia Commonwealth University around January of 2015.
Next in line for the growing business, however, is James Madison University in Harrisonburg.
